Canada Internet publishes municipal broadband availability readings from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada's National Broadband Data (NBD) map. Pages report the fastest generally available advertised download tier, related upload context where present, technology hints such as fibre, and provider counts derived from matched hex cells and community points.

Policy context

CRTC Telecom Regulatory Policy 2016-496 set the universal service objective for fixed broadband: access to at least 50 Mbps download / 10 Mbps upload with an unlimited data option. The Universal Broadband Fund (ISED) and the CRTC Broadband Fund support builds where private investment alone has been slow. NBD measures what providers say they can sell; CRTC monitoring reports and Statistics Canada household surveys speak to national adoption and price, not hex-level coverage.

Methodology notes

Providers report offered services to ISED roughly twice a year. NBD aggregates those submissions onto hexagonal grids and community points under the Open Government Licence. Pipelines match nearby hexes and points to each municipality, then label direct versus regional confidence when the nearest evidence sits far from the built-up area. Expansion project layers mark funded or planned builds until service is flagged as available.

Coverage is an availability ceiling: what a household could subscribe to, not the speed a speed-test records on a given evening, and not adoption or price.
